Many months later, I returned. And got my ass handed to me. But I went in with more confidence and drive to finish him. It took probably 40-50 attempts today, totally to about 70-80 over the course of the months, similar to a DLC boss. And I have definitely improved since my time with the DLC. So this was a hell of boss for me.
I found Claw grip to be key here because locking on wasn't really a good idea. My strategy here was to go for the arms whenever I felt comfortable, and use the legs for damage when I was dodging away. It took a long time to learn the distance of some attacks so I could walk away from more attacks. Rolling in Bloodborne has the downside of being a lot slower than quicksteps when locked on, so the Beast's quick punches down had to be avoided, not iframed.
The arms after a while will break, and then it will take increased damage. This is nice, but I found it nicer to start going for the other arm and break it too. The reason is that when he heals, although he takes reduced damage, it's free beast meter, and also a nice chance to buff/heal if needed.
But once he went phase 2, I didn't want to deal with the head at all. So I started staying closer to the legs. This is super dangerous. It's hard to see his tells from there, and the stomp on his right foot can one shot you (as pretty much all his punches do).
By the end of it I had phase 1 down. It used to take 5 minutes to get through that phase, but I learned him so well I was able to take advantage of more damage ops. Phase 2 was a mess though. I just kept myself moving as much as possible, and making sure that I didn't roll too early on the slow slam attack. You can see me panicking when I start missing attacks towards the end, and nearly get myself killed. But I got it.
