Daniel Lubetzky hitchhiked out of a Davos snowstorm and pitched PeaceWorks to the couple who picked him up — Michael and Susan Dell.
PeaceWorks was not a big business. Its best year ever hit $3 million in sales; most years it sat under a million. But people loved the concept — using trade to get Arabs and Israelis working together — and the recognition got Daniel invited to the World Economic Forum. Where he promptly failed to notice that the Swiss Alps in January are cold, brought no jacket, and got caught in a snowstorm with no taxi in sight.
So he flagged down a black car, asked the couple inside for a lift, got in, and talked. At length. About PeaceWorks, about Arabs and Israelis, about himself — before finally asking their names. Then he spent years emailing Michael Dell and Jeff Bezos anyway. "I think I was just stupid enough to not know what I didn't know," he says — and argues that the naivete is exactly what gave him the fire to eventually get things right.
