My laptop is 8 years old. I have been thinking about getting a new one. I learned about doing an SSD install and decided to give it a shot to see if I can squeeze a few more years out of this machine. I used the Crucial software to scan my laptop to determine what SSD would be compatible. That part is easy. It scans and then provides a list of SDD to pick from. I selected the one I wanted for $69.00 and added 4 gig of ram for $49.00 to max me out at 8 gig. Also added the SSD kit for $1.00. The SSD kit was on special from $24.00. The SSD comes with a code for Acronis cloning software. I tried it and it did not work. I then tried Macrium and it also did not work. I called Crucial tech support and they suggested I try Aomei. It worked well. They seemed to have several more methods available to try if that one did not work. It must be due to the wide variety of drives and configurations that not one method is compatible with them all.
This video is a brief comparison of before and after. The left side is after and the right side is before. The right side actually had about a 20 second head start that is not shown due to my lame editing skills. Huge difference in bootup, and memory access. The processor still runs the same but I was having memory access delays on the HDD and the SSD greatly improved it. Feels like a new computer. The Crystal Disk test I showed is for the SSD. I did one for the HDD but messed up the video and lost it. It was between 70-80 mbs where the SSD is up at 260-270 mbs for read and write speeds. I feel it was money well spent to get performance and extend the life of this machine.
