MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!
This is my gift in the Secrete Odin HTTYD Fandom exchange, sooo, SURPRISE, this is for you: Sakura Sou! I hope you love Hiccstrid! Judging from your Tumblr page I believe so ;)
I've been saying every year I want to be a part of Berks Grapevine Secrete Odin and I finally just plunged in. But this is my ONLY Christmas vid this year, sadly, (I had so many plans) so this is a Merry Christmas to all of you! Pray you have a blessed holiday and New Year! =D
I've been promising a Hiccstrid vid for the past 8 months and just can't seem to finish it. Hopefully this makes up for it. I think this is just the sweetest little Christian Christmas/romance song I've ever heard. ♥
I must confess, I wanted to do something different this year because I've felt different, more sentimental and I hate to say, some of the loneliest in my life this season. (This is coming from an only-child btw, where dealing with loneliness becomes second nature.) Whenever I'm alone, I can usually entertain myself or put on my head phones, but, that doesn't work downtown in a quiet office for hours and sitting outside a restaurant eating chicken salad for lunch 5 days a week. All you see are couples and families laughing and talking together as they go by. I think the loneliest feeling in the world is not when you are literally alone but when you're invisible surrounded by a sea of people. Thats when you know something is missing in your life...
Well, one day someone did come and interrupt my lonesome world and lets just say forced me to open my heart to romance, for the first time in forever. (Well, I think I've been in denial for a few years now I just never want to admit it) I know this is what has generated all these new feelings and made me realize certain things about myself I hadn't thought about before. Though thats pretty much it; I'll be a back to being a lone, lonely, loner starting next year. *sighs* I'm sure its for the best.... BUT, like I said, I'm an expert in dealing with loneliness. I trust God has a plan.
I guess this is what essentially sparked my interest in Hiccstrid creating this holiday vid. Its literally a Christmas miracle I got this project done with all those mixed feeling combined with the stress of the holidays....not to mention my PC. I've been at war with it trying to edit and freaking out because its showing symptoms the hard drive is dying, AGAIN, for the 4th freakin time! *I pray it's not*

Working at Walt Disney Animation Studios was truly a dream come true and I could not be more proud of all the talented artist that poured their souls into their shots and watching them iterate each one to perfection here. This vid is a tribute to them and to showcase all their beautiful effects in Wish!
Im happy to share that Ill be returning to Disney to work on Moana 2 for the next few months as well!! 🌊 So this might be that last time you hear from me before I drown in work again, ahaha.

Also, I guess this is my official name reveal for my channel. Ive gone back and forth on this since I am a very private person, but Ive worked long and hard to get that credit so it seems silly to hide and not share with you guys too. I thank each and everyone of my friends here for your support and encouragement in this journey 💙
BTW, I know people generally have a lot of question about animation/FX and my journey so feel free to ask anything and I will do my best to answer what I can.
I want to add that, NONE of this would have been possible without God. I dont deserve this dream but He has been so good in opening the doors to make it possible. It felt like a leap of faith accepting the offer for Disney last year, but looking back I can see His hand in every step of the way. So praise be to Him for, all this! 🙏
About this vid:
So, Ive been meaning to make a Wish vid sooner but I couldnt find the right song to use till fairly recently. I also challenged myself to make this vid entirely in a different editor, Da Vinci Resolve. I was getting sick of Vegas crashes and the masking/tracking is awful, so I and decided this vid was the perfect candidate to attempt a full AMV in it. I could get used to this editor, its free, its sleek and its fun, but Vegas will always be my first love. I discovered Da Vinci crashes as much as Vegas, aha.
I also tried to make this in a similar style to a lot of Beauty of .... vids particularly Star Wars vids that Ive seen focusing on the visuals and ambience.

✎ Hello my friends, its been awhile....
Too long to go into details, but im surviving. Sorry I havent posted in awhile and cant promise I will but I have missed yall and keep up with everything, and everyone.
Believe it or not, today is the 15th anniversary of my Youtube channel (Mercy that makes me sound so old, lol) I wish I had a more grand celebratory vid for the occasion, but all I have is this simple little edit thats been sitting in my folder all done collecting dust.
Created this during the height of the Live Action film last year paralleling one of my favorite scenes in HTTYD - the Issac Scene (Or Downed Dragon). Unfortunately the live action version was a disappointment there.. I cant believe they took out all the dialogue! They had it in the trailer too. Made it much harder to make this vid cause I had it planned way before seeing the film. I guess I never uploaded it cause I thought about adding text or stuff but meh....I only wanted to focus on the parallels anyway.
Anywho, hope you guys enjoy the vid!

My part to DreamingOnTheMoons 6th MEP!! As you can see, we got to mash it up a bit with 5 movies this time. I chose my 3 favs that I HAVE seen. (Yet to see MvA, and Megamind) I fell in ♥ with this song; its PERFECT for these movies. (Especially one special movie IMHO ;) I could have easily made it solely for HTTYD but I was eager to mash again! In spite of a surprising slow start, I guess it came out satisfactory. ✎ This has got to be the cringiest video for me. Honestly, most of this should not even see the light of day, BUT, since I like to keep record of everything....I decided to at least give ALL of my work a proper sign off. I should have had this done last summer but I was away in Europe. (Hard to believe that now.) So here we are! Ill be doing something for this year as well.
BUT FIRST, some history:
✎My 2nd year at SAU was, safe to say, the BEST year out of three. It was also the nuttiest because in order to save money I did Sophomore & Junior years worth of animation work at once. (Do not recommend doing that.)
Let me break down each semester and class from the video.
So during the Fall of 2018, I was drowning with 19 credit hrs. Funny enough though, I never felt more alive than when I was DYING during all this.
At SAU, Sophomore year your goal is to make a 30 sec short film, touching all parts of the animation pipeline: storyboard, design, model, rig, environment, animating, VFX, lighting/render. (By yourself) However, all your classes contribute to a common goal.
SEMESTER #1
0:04 Character Design:
Im ready to hold a Viking Funeral for Finn here, lol! This one class was basically animation on steroids. You are not designing characters. You design 1 character, model, sculpt, add blendshapes at the last minute for facial expressions, then rig and paint weights + add clothes and hair, all in 16 weeks. Really, character designing needs to be broken up into multiple classes because its so dense. Designing/drawing characters is NOT my thing at all! As you can see, he deviated from my original design, and model wise lacks appeal, and in terms of the rig is very limited in function/expressions, BUT out of 13 students, I was 1 of 2 that actually finished so Im not gonna complain.
Software: Modeled in Maya. Sculpt in Mudbox. Used Mgear for rigging. Marvelous Designer for clothes. Vray to render.
0:20 Visual Development
Honestly, this is NOT an accurate example of what viz dev is. Viz Dev is all about trying to capture what the look/feel of the project should be through color and various design iterations. This is basically me just learning to paint in Photoshop, lol. (This was my first time digitally painting so take it easy on me!) Most of these are 2 hrs studios, recorded, so there wasnt time to make it look pretty anyway, but if I can survive in class critiques, than I can handle showing you guys these. This class was the 1 chill moment of my day usually ;)
0:36 Storyboarding
I personally do not enjoy storyboarding, but I really enjoyed this class. Hendel Butoy, our professor was a director from Disney, and just hearing him talk about the art of cinematics was so fascinating!

1:00 Character Animation I
This is the class its all about right? RIGHT! Especially when we had Hendel teaching us the secretes! *sobs* Finally get to apply the principles of 2D animation to 3D characters!
The other classes for Semester 1 were Collab and Programming for Artist. Ill get to Collab, but there was no fun way of showing lines of code so Im just noting it here. I learned some basic Python coding skills but boy it was a lot harder than my professor said it be. That made my 19 credit semester.
SEMESTER #2
1:43 Environment Design
After making your character from Character Design from semester 1 for your sophomore short, next step is the environment. Learned a lot to keep a neat and tidy Maya scene so it runs efficiently, lol! I had a lot of fun making the world for Finn, ahehe.
1:52 Compositing
This was a very tedious class, right in line with my VFX route. We learned a node based compositing software called Nuke. The CG integration was my favorite! (Had to have a dragon in every project, lol!)
2:20 Collaborative Studios
At SAU, your whole Junior year is a little different in that you spend the year working with your class on a short film. Unlike Sophomore year, you specialize in 1 or a few areas in the pipeline and work collaboratively. (Like in a studio) This was my FAVORITE class, but socially very, very, VERY uncomfortable steps out of my comfort zone. This was a 4 credit hr. class, meaning we spent 5 hours straight in-class time working. (Many more hours outside of class)
Please note: I cannot yet link the full vid because we havent officially released it. Also, I only highlighted the areas I worked in, including: producing, modeling the environment and set dressing the shots, and doing the character textures. Then everyone animates at least a couple shots. I did about 6 total. There was a lot more work and effort done by my team to bring this project to life that I didnt showcase.
