“In Danger’s Path” is episode 33 of the famous Kalem railroad serial, “The Hazards of Helen”. Kalem wanted to compete with the popular Pathè photoplay, “The Perils of Pauline”, and turned to 22-year-old rising star Helen Holmes to do it. Thus began a weekly series of loosely connected one reel railroad melodramas. Each week, Helen would outwit, outsmart, and outmaneuver thieves, bandits, tramps, hobos, disgruntled employees, runaway trains, and anyone or anything else that interfered with the railroad she worked for. “In Danger’s Path” is episode 33 of the famous series, and one of only seven surviving episodes left to us today. While not entirely representative of the serial as a whole (Helen ends up having to be rescued instead of rescuing), it’s still a fun episode to watch.
