Franz Joseph Haydn is considered to be more or less the inventor of the genre string quartet. Although he also wrote quite a number of trio’s for various instruments, his quartets excel in equilibrium in every possible way.

Haydn wrote two violins, a viola and a cello into a perfect match. And he apparently loved it so much that he wrote no less than 83 of them.
The Buchberger quartet is probably more associated with twentienth-century music, but they know their classics very well. We begin at the beginning: Quartets 1 - 6, Op. 9. Most enjoyable and absolutely brilliant music.
