Joseph Haydn was a national treasure in his native Austria. Excelling in all areas of composition, he earned the title of the “Father of the Symphony,” wrote celebrated vocal, and played a pioneering role in the development of the string quartet.
The unique works featured here—his only surviving compositions for violin and viola—are believed to have been written in the late 1760s or early 1770s, during his service at the Esterházy court. Although the exact circumstances of their composition remain unclear, most of Haydn’s violin works from this period were likely intended for Luigi Tomasini, the leader of the court orchestra. These sonatas often favour the violin in melodic prominence, while the obbligato viola provides essential harmonic support, creating a finely balanced and intimate dialogue between the instruments.
Luigi Boccherini’s string quintets offer far more than the famously popular Minuet from G. 275. While that movement has become almost iconic, it represents only a small glimpse of his vast output of chamber music. The gifted Italian composer wrote an extensive range of string quintets for various instrumental combinations, showcasing his refined sense of texture and lyricism. Among these are his earlier quintets for two violins, viola, and two cellos, which have now been recorded and reveal the elegance and expressive depth of his chamber writing.
