Hawaiʻi plans to pump the brakes on the state income tax breaks planned in years ahead.
In Gov. Josh Green’s State of the State address this year, he said there would be no changes this year to the massive state income tax cuts passed in 2024, but that the planned tax cuts for 2027 through 2029 will be “paused” for all state taxpayers.
“We would have been able to keep all of the tax package that was passed two years ago had we not seen the pretty devastating financial picture from the shutdown in federal government, the tariffs and the decline in tourism,” Green said at the time.
At a Jan. 27 Civil Beat panel, House Minority Leader Rep. Lauren Cheape Matsumoto, House Majority Leader Rep. Sean Quinlan and Assistant Majority Whip Sen. Chris Lee (@senatorchrislee) shared their thoughts on this issue.
