A dedicated group of volunteers has been restoring the scenic slopes below Diamond Head for the past five years got hit with a surprise in January – a police report about their work.
That’s because they've been stewarding and planting without proper city approvals, which the volunteer group says is unnecessarily onerous.
It’s an ask forgiveness, not permission approach, its founder acknowledges, but one that is focused on mālama ʻāina — honoring the land.
One city official said “any further action” would result in another call to police, but a top city official has stepped in and a meeting is scheduled for next week.
