Haunted Horses is an industrial-punk trio hailing from Seattle, WA. Their sound is thunderous and chaotic, utilizing a wall of noise techniques through an onslaught of keys, guitars and drums. Myke Pelly's off kilter drumming and Colin Dawson's architectural noise structures create jittery post-punk that is both upbeat and gloomy. Most recently, the band enlisted Seattle-based bassist Brian McClelland of Filth is Eternal and He Whose Ox is Gored, creating an added level of heavy rhythmic noise that not only contributes an exciting dynamic layer to the album sonically, but to their already-captivating live performance as well. The bleak vocals are persistently ominous in a seductive way, conjuring up the nightmarish aura of a dissonant horror-film soundtrack. With reviewers like Anthony Fantano (Needle Drop) likening their previous work to legendary bands such as Swans, Bauhaus, and Killing Joke, Haunted Horses carry on the tradition of noise that can terrorize as well as entrance, oftentimes simultaneously. This is evident in the list of hard-hitting contemporaries they’ve shared the stage and toured with, including Lingua Ignota, Portrayal of Guilt, A Place to Bury Strangers, Bambara, and Boy Harsher. Fans of Einstürzende Neubauten, Swans, Girl Band, Death Grips, The Soft Moon, Street Sects, Ho99o9, and Uniform will find Haunted Horses a welcome addition to their lexicon.
The Worst Has Finally Happened continues in the band’s approach to music as a battering ram into the brain, now as a trio with Myke Pelly, Colin Dawson, Brian McClelland (Filth is Eternal, He Whose Ox is Gored). Sounds sway from mechanical heartbeat thumps and the delay-drenched beeping of echolocation radar devices tracking down a potential victim in “Swarms,” to something resembling an alarm signifying Chernobyl-strength a nuclear meltdown in “Thorns.” Everything feels perfectly orchestrated to leave the listener on edge. It’s hard to tell if Haunted Horses’ music is meant for the hunter or the hunted, but either way, it holds on tight, sinks its claws in and doesn’t let up.

UNDER ATTACK is a band focused on “vicious precision hardcore” made up of vocalist Alex Copeland, guitarist Mark Telfian, bassist/vocalist Jason Hodges (Suppression, Oozing Meat), and drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste). Collectively, the band has an extensive “ex members of” list including Limp Wrist, Discordance Axis, Human Remains, Hail Mary, Eucharist, and many, many more. The band began a few years back, when Dave Witte and Mark Telfian connected at a party in Richmond, VA. After many meetings at Daves food truck, Go Go Vegan Go, they talked about forming a brutal hardcore band with no gimmicks, in the spirit of predecessors like Negative Approach, Straight Ahead, and, in general, old school 80s punk and hardcore. After figuring out two other old friends to bring into the mix, the band started practicing nonstop in February of 2019. By March, they recorded a 5 song demo released in the US on Vinyl Conflict and in Europe on AutoReverse. In August of 2019, their first 7” came out on Iron Lung Records called “Through the Blade.” In February of 2021, they had a split 7” with the Dutch hardcore legends Seein Red on Autoreverse and Way Back When Records, as well as another split 7” in the works with Loose Nukes on Mutant Sound Records and a split 12” with Fright on Gloom records. Needless to say, the band is relentless in both musical approach and work ethic.
“Preservation’s Crash” continues with the band’s dark and aggressive driving force of 80s punk and hardcore influence with this release, really commiting to leaning into Dave’s impossibly fast, hard-hitting, manic, but uncompromising drum skills to complement Alex’s scummy vocals. This sonic assault is a mere extension of the lyrical message: in short, anger and frustration with life and society. The hostility of religious institutions that ferment self loathing. Coping with depression through life’s hardships.")

Planet B’s second LP has been a long time in the making. Obviously, over this span of time, there has been an almost unimaginable amount of surreality and insanity to pull from when creating the band’s unique hip-hop-punk-meets-sci-fi-horror-movie sonic aesthetic. As always, the sound is as confrontational as it is catchy, the lyrics scathing and the beats bizarre. Earworms abound. As with the band’s first release, there are a host of guest collaborations on the various tracks, from Josie Cotton to David Scott Stone (ex-LCD Soundsystem, Melvins), D-Styles (Invisibl Skratch Piklz), and more. Perhaps most personally meaningful are the instrumental contributions from Gabe Serbian (The Locust) and Eric Livingston (Mamaleek), both family to the band, who have each passed on from this dimension and back to whatever radical planet they came from since the creation of the album.
