During the spring, the southern dunlins on Öland laid their eggs. We carefully collected and put them in hatching machines so that as many chicks as possible would survive. In the wild, most eggs are taken, mainly by foxes, badgers and crows. By rearing the young under protected conditions the chance of survival increases and gives them a head start in life.
Our fantastic animal keepers work around the clock to care for and feed the chics. At the beginning of May, the first four chicks hatched, and since then more chicks have hatched. So far there are 16 small chicks. When they hatch, the chicks weigh only 8 grams!
The eggs have been collected from the southern dunlins' strongest strongholds in the country, namely Schäferiängarna and Stora Ören on Öland. Since we collect the eggs so early in the season, there is a good chance that the parents will lay another round. Best case scenario, then the number of fledglings can double!
