Waste and disposal are a little considered part of our daily lives; where does that old smart phone go when it stops working? Looking at only short-term solutions has led us to social and environmental inequity. Dumping, landfills, metal salvage facilities are often in underserved communities; the interest in profits over people has led us to policies that have given over the control over critical resources to other political entities. In this month’s virtual Science on Tap, Marta Guron, PhD and Managing Director of the Center for Sustainable Separation of Metals will take us through these issues and look at the longer term impacts and potential solutions around sustainably sourced critical metals.

Dr. Marta Guron received her BA in Chemistry at Cornell, followed by a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at Penn. She has dedicated her career to sustainability, chemical education and finding a voice for women and minorities in STEM. Having run countless outreach events from the preschool to middle school levels and having taught at levels ranging from high school to graduate school, she combines her love of science and interest in sustainability with a dedication to clear communication about important sustainability issues, particularly in waste management. She has published both on laboratory research and chemical education and has been quoted in both mainstream and niche periodicals as an expert in waste management. She now serves as the Managing Director of the NSF funded Center for Sustainable Separations of Metals, combining her passion for sustainability and her work in Inorganic Chemistry.
