Hey everyone, today I’m going to show you how to inspect and adjust the parking brake on a Honda S2000.
Difficulty: Easy
Estimated time: 1/2 hour
Tools necessary:
- 10mm wrench
- Jack + jackstands
- 14mm wrench
Steps
In order to inspect the parking brake begin with the parking brake in the off position. Then pull up on the parking brake with roughly 44 lb-ft of force. The service manual says that the parking brake should sit between 9-13 clicks or notches, if it doesn’t it will have to be adjusted. Luckily it's pretty simple.
1. The first thing you want to is get the rear of the car on jackstands.
2. Now you’ll have to get access to the adjustment nut. Remove your shift knob by using a 14mm wrench to remove the lock nut and then screw the shift knob loose…
3. Now you want to remove the center console. Carefully pry the edges of the center console away from the transmission tunnel and it should come right off. Once it is free disconnect the two wiring harnesses from underneath the center console. Pull up the parking brake and lift the center console away.
4. With the center console removed you can properly adjust the parking brake. Set the parking brake to one click or notch and tighten the parking brake adjustment nut with a 10mm wrench until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned. You want the parking brake to begin working as soon as the parking brake is engaged…….This will likely take a few attempts to get right. To ensure that you have not over tightened the adjustment nut, there should be no drag on the rear wheels with the parking brake removed.
5. Once you are satisfied with your adjustment you have to put things back together. Reconnect the two wiring harnesses underneath the center console and pop the center console back into place.
6. Screw the shift knob tight and fasten the lock nut with a 14mm wrench.
7. Lastly, lower the rear of the car back to the ground and you’re done.
