Continuing progress on hand forged hardware for our six board chest thermal cooker project. I cut out the escutcheon plates, forged and riveted the staples to them, and then forged the handles and fit them to the plates.
I’ve learned a lot about forging and making my own hardware on this project and I’ve advanced my skills in forge welding, splitting, and shaping decorative ironwork. In this video I got to practice working with sheet metal and plate, and riveting things onto plates. Shaping the plates with the cold chisel was a new process for me, and I was pleased with how quickly and accurately you can make complex curves with such basic tools.
In needs to be mentioned that I am not a professional smith. I am a beginner and I only am making these pieces for the first time, so don’t consider this video a tutorial. For a great tutorial video on making this type of hinge, I recommend DF in the Shop’s video on making this type of hinge. I followed his process almost exactly. Here it is.
