This video continues the series of simple demonstrations using "hand drawn" examples to visualize different effects of atmospheric refraction over long distances above a flat surface. While the last video gave examples of upward and downward refraction using rays of consistent radius, this video will show the effects that can be created by defining multiple paths of light bending by different degrees.

Stretching and compression can also be considered "vertical magnification" and "vertical demagnification" respectively. We could also call these effects "towering" and "stooping", but apparently those terms, along with "sinking" and "looming" are only valid when describing refraction effects on a globe, which we are not.

I have at least 7 more videos planned for this series, most of which are dependent on new features of the program that I'm currently working on in my limited spare time. I'm aiming for each video to be about 5 minutes long. Tentatively, here are the next 7 video ideas.

$Hand Drawn Refraction pt. 2 - Stretching and Compression$ $Mysterious Camera Movement (but not really) A real time highlight from observation #5, March 26th, 2023. I have another video coming later today, also from observation #5. After that, Ill be working on a long multi-part project that will be all about refraction, displacement and mirage classifications.$ $Flat Earth: The Strongest Inferior Mirage - part 3 The rest of the time lapse footage highly sped up, from 4 different camera heights. The subtitles for the 1 meter elevation segment and 30 cm elevation are switched! The video took over an hour to render so I didnt want to redo it just for that. It goes 2 meters, 1 meter, 30cm (1 foot), 5 meters. All heights are approximate. The purpose of this video is to show that inferior mirage conditions maintained from all elevations despite the temperature going from significantly colder to much warmer than the water over the course of the 5 hour observation. To me this strongly suggests that upward refraction (sinking, inferior mirage) conditions are the norm except under very specific conditions.$

$See Zero Black swans are certainly not rare here. If measured by apparent radius, a small concave Earth is a common appearance, even at much higher camera heights. In fact, its generally an everyday occurrence - if I can outlast the broad inferior mirage phase as the air is warming up rapidly. This very warm sunny April day, I felt the apparent concavity should be greater than it was, even though it was quite strong from all camera heights for most of the 8 hour observation. I havent analyzed most of the footage though, so that could change. Now I think I know why it never appears concave above a certain height, and rarely appears flat shortly above that height range. I mean, Ive been thinking this for years, and showing bits and pieces in my videos, but finally I have the footage I need to put it all together and explain a few very important things, the way I see them. Not in this video though. This video gives a very rough geometric comparison of each model (using my earlier less compressed reference shot, cropped to the actual water level) to the apparent image assuming approximate eye level, but thats not the main point. Theres something going on with refraction here but it might not be exactly what you think. I want to know what my subscribers see and who has been thinking the same things I have, especially about refraction gradients. If nobody sees what I see, then I have more explaining to do than I thought. But I expect a few to pick up on it.. I may start doing live streams again, or at least narrating some videos. Ill see.$

In-Ferry-Or Mirage Day 10 - The Long Wait

$InFerryOr Mirage 2022 #2 - Another Fairly Smooth Transition Getting all the easy videos done first. From Shelter Bay observation #3. Same location as the last one, far dock at 5 km, close land about 1.1 km. Camera heights from 6 inches to 10 inches. The point of these repeat observations is to document a change in refraction conditions with time, over a short distance. At some point I will make a video better explaining the ferry dimensions and far dock height, in case anyone wants to use these as evidence for a particular Earth shape. From these heights there would be less than a meter of the ferry (and ~2 high meter fairy dock) hidden at the far shore on a globe. The angle of visible water past the 1.1 km point is a better indicator of horizon (or inferior mirage) distance. It should be small on FE and almost undiscernible on GE with standard refraction, especially with the later wider FOV.$
