remember kids, the best way to resolve an intense and true love triangle is polyamory.
i dont know how to write summeries so i'll dump all this here...

Thanks to his heroic deeds on the battlefield, Kapitan Strakhov was more than welcome, some would even say required, in every saloon, ballroom and gathering of the great high society matriarchs of Peterburg. And so, the young Kapitan obliged; enjoying everything society’s crème de la crème had to offer. Then he met her.
Vasilisa Repnina was sent to her relatives in Peterbug for only one reason, the most important reason according to her mother: she was to make her debut in the high society and find herself a rich husband. And so, amid the reckless adventures and danicing (so much dancing!), Vasja met him.
They keep meeting at other parties, exchanging kisses and more, but war doesn’t stop, not even for them, and so young Dmitri goes back to the battle. They write letters, so many pages upon pages of letters. Love words, passion and longing. Promise of marriage and life together when he gets back. Vasja almost loses her mind with worry when he is reported missing. Nothing could console her, not even Ksenija.
In this whirlwind of worry and sorrow and regret, a match is struck; she is to marry lord Gagarin, a widower and twenty years her senior. Her perents are deilighted at the prospects, and quite pleased with themselves for arranging it. Vasja however doesn't have more than two days to process her fate when news of Dmitri's return come - he was wounded but alive.
They spend almost every night of his leave together, the betrayal and hurt being swallowed in their embraces.
The day of meeting his bethroed finnally arrives, and Lev Ilijič Gagarin lets his heart hope afteterwards. His young bride was refreshing in her youth but also... genuine. On the other side of things, Dmitri’s leave comes to an end and he says his goodbyes. He's content at this point. A bit in pain, but also...sort of relieved. He knew he will have to marry well in order to further advance his social station and begin his political career.
Lev and Vasja keep meeting; and with each walk, each talk, Lev’s heart warms a bit more. Vasja certainly did not expect him to be so… handsome. And respectful.
They build a slow kind of rapport and friendship, and with each passing day, Vasja’s heart grows more fond of her husband. But every time Dmitri Strakhov is in the city, she rushes to meet him. It’s so obvious, the bond they share. The passion.
Lev was not blind. He may be the one holding Vasja on his arm, but her eyes were only for the soldier. It was over before it even begun, he thinks.
...
Dmitri eventually marries; the girl of great wealth and desirable familial connections. He and Vasja keep meeting in secret but she has changed; her eyes have a new shine to them and she mentiones her husband by his given name. She didn't even realise, but Dmitri knew it: Vasja was in love with her husband. He blocks the realisation his heart had made weeks ago and instead starts throwing petty comments on Gagarin’s account.
Something was wrong, Vasja thought. It wasn’t just him marrying to this woman his mother chose for him. Her worry was met with cynical words.
They have a terrible fight.
A year passes before they meet again. And they are… fine. They make their peace and he still loves her. And she still loves him, but it’s different. It’s different now.
Vasja grows tired of hiding and confesses to Lev, who at this point thought the Strakhov affair was over, and he becomes distant again, quiet.
Time does its magic though and ffter much confusion, heartache and regret, an arrangement is reached. It was an arrangement all three participants came to accept and love for what it was.
