In the remote reaches of Haleakala National Park's Kipahulu District lies a forbidden forest. Little was known of this biological wonderland until 1967, when researchers discovered unparalleled levels of biodiversity and endemic species, species found nowhere else on Earth. In order to protect the rarities of this remote valley, the decision was made to close it. Permanently. Forever. To forgo one of the main tenets of National Park management: access. To this day, only authorized research personnel and land managers are allowed access to this Valley in order to protect its most vulnerable residents, and ensure that they retain a refuge in a world increasingly dominated by human impacts. This is the story of the Kipahulu Valley.
