After reading book 4 in Rick Riordan’s Trials of Apollo series, “The Tyrant’s Tomb”, there was one plot point that left me…unsatisfied, and that was the tale of one of the book’s main characters, Lavinia Asimov. Perhaps due to her appearance being so far into the Percy Jackson canon, she is rarely talked about, yet I believe this character’s circumstances and story parallel the real struggles of many disabled people, especially children, placed in environments that don’t suit them, without a second thought. The books weren’t…bad, per se, but there WAS definitely one commonality between them that genuinely bothered me: how these two books approached the subject of feminism and applied this to their female protagonists, both of whom were pursuing stereotypically masculine goals, and the other characters and situations they were exposed to. In this video I discuss Stephen King’s out of print novel “Rage”. Stephen King originally wrote Rage under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, and when Bachman was eventually revealed to be Stephen King, it was included in his anthology “The Bachman Books”. However, for reasons as discussed in the video, Rage was taken out of print, by the author’s own wishes. This was my first venture into Haruki Murakami’s work; I’d heard it was a bit on the weird side, but that didn’t deter me. I’d wanted to read 1Q84 for a while as I assumed it was a retelling of “1984” by George Orwell, a book which I thoroughly enjoy and feel is a very important piece of work.
