The Meeks Duo - Piano 4 hands | Gymnopedie No. 1 by Satie (Piano 4-hands, based on Debussy's orchestration) @TheMeeksDuo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 8 minutes ago
Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie no. 1, arranged for piano 4-hands (duet) by Scott Meek, based on Claude Debussy’s orchestral version of the piece. Performed live by The Meeks Duo at BlueShore Financial Performing Arts Centre, North Vancouver, for the Capilano University recital series.
Sheet music available at: themeeksduo.com/sheet-music-store/p/gymnopedie-1-by-erik-satie
Claude Debussy published orchestrations of both the 1st and 3rd of Satie’s Gymnopédies (originally for solo piano) in order to help popularize his friend’s compositions. The main differences between the solo and orchestra versions of the 1st Gymnopédie are the addition of cymbals (the low As), harp (all the triplets in the primo part), and high register strings (octave-doubled melody in primo), all of which you can hear in this new piano duet arrangement.
Clare experimented with using the sostenuto (middle) pedal to sustain the cymbal sounds, and it added really added a feeling of mystery to the music!
Please also watch our Gymnopédie no. 3 recording! youtu.be/lD7D9tz6PSo
The arrangement is dedicated to our supporter Jaimie Baker, who requested it from us.
