Gym Leader Norman
Spinda, Level 27 (Normal)
Vigoroth, Level 27 (Normal)
Linoone, Level 29 (Normal)
Slaking, Level 31 (Normal)
Money: $3200
Norman is a significant challenge. Fighting-type Pokémon like Machamp or Hariyama are ideal for this battle, as they can quickly dispose of most Normal-type Pokémon. Alternatively, Graveler, Golem, or Lairon offer high Defense, allowing them to take half damage from Normal attacks. If you lack these options, be prepared for a tough fight.
Spinda may confuse you with its attacks, but its average stats make it easy to defeat. Vigoroth, the evolved form of Slakoth, boasts high Attack and Speed. Take it down quickly to avoid serious damage. Linoone is a relatively weak Pokémon. Watch out for Belly Drum, which maximizes its attack power but halves its HP. Seize the opportunity to defeat it before it can attack.
Slaking poses the real threat. Its massive Attack stat and above-average Defense allow it to one-hit KO most Pokémon. However, its Truant ability forces it to skip every other turn. Exploit this window to attack! Avoid inflicting status conditions like poison or paralysis, as Slaking's Facade move deals more damage under these conditions. High defense is crucial for this fight. Focus your entire team if necessary. If you struggle, train your Pokémon in unexplored areas or in the wild.
Defeating Norman earns you the Balance Badge and TM42: Facade (a powerful move boosted by status conditions). The next badge will let you use Surf outside of battle! Your Pokémon's defense will also increase with this badge.
