This is a story from the Isle of Man about a ghostly creature that was reputed to haunt a farmhouse at Cashen's Gap near the village of Dalby on the west coast of the island.
The creature's name was Gef, (pronounced Jef) and his bizarre, unexplained story still draws interest nearly a century later: most recently in fiction, in retrospective investigations, and in Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, a 2023 comedy starring Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver, and the voice of Neil Gaiman as the talking mongoose.
The family's name was Irving, but poetic licence has been used in the song changing the name to Irvine to rhyme with "nine".
