Phyla-Vell, played by the talented child actress Kai Zen, is one of the white-haired children rescued from the clutches of the High Evolutionary. But who is Phyla-Vell exactly, and what are her connections to some of Marvel Comics' most famous spacefaring heroes?
In Marvel Comics, Phyla-Vell's story begins with her brother Genis. Their mother, Elysius, an Eternal from Titan, used the genetic material of the late Kree hero Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, to conceive them. Phyla-Vell possesses superhuman strength, flight, durability, and a host of other incredible abilities inherited from her father and brother. She is a force to be reckoned with in the cosmic realm.
During her journey in the comics, Phyla-Vell even assumed the mantle of Captain Marvel herself for a brief period. She formed a romantic relationship with Moondragon, a former Avenger, and the two became one of Marvel's iconic LGBTQ+ couples. Phyla-Vell's adventures led her to join the Guardians of the Galaxy, where she became the new Quasar after obtaining the Quantum Bands.
The Quantum Bands granted Phyla-Vell unparalleled energy manipulation powers. She could absorb and transform energy, create forcefields, and even construct solid energy weapons like her signature Quantum Sword with them. However, her fate took a twist, and she eventually transformed into Martyr, the avatar of Oblivion.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phyla-Vell's origins differ from the comics. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, she is portrayed as one of the High Evolutionary's experiments, a young child with white hair. While her connections to Mar-Vell remain uncertain, it is possible that the High Evolutionary used Mar-Vell's DNA to create Phyla-Vell and the other children. Only time will tell if we'll see more of Phyla-Vell in future MCU projects, where we may uncover more about her true nature and origins.
