Director James Gunn includes numerous hidden details, Easter eggs, and references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's past, its future, and the comics in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3". The movie marks the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the characters take over the Marvel Studios logo intro. The film reveals Rocket's backstory and introduces his friends, Otter, Walrus, and Rabbit, who later name themselves Lylla, Teefs, and Floor. Lylla is Rocket's love interest in the comics and is introduced as an Easter egg from the first movie. The film features Linda Cardellini as Lylla's voice and Mikaela Hoover as Floor's voice.
In the current timeline, Rocket tests his anti-gravity boots on Knowhere, which becomes the headquarters of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the "Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special". He listens to the Sony Zune that Yondu gave Peter Quill, causing Quill to become drunk and pass out due to the emotional distress caused by Gamora's death in "Avengers Infinity War". Nebula takes Quill to a room that is actually a prison escape pod from the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film. During this time, the team is attacked by Adam, a superpowered being created by Ayesha, empress of the Sovereign, for stealing batteries from her in "Vol 2". The Guardians are unable to tend to Rocket's injuries due to a kill switch embedded in him, and Nebula connects her brain to Rocket's body to find an override code for a device created by Orgocorp. The Guardians leave Knowhere on their new ship, The Bowie.
The Guardians of the Galaxy infiltrate the Orgoscope to retrieve Rocket's file. During their escape, they turn off the gravity, and only their team, having anti-gravity boots, manages to float away. Drax gets injured in the battle, and Peter tries to woo the receptionist. The episode features references to previous Marvel movies, such as "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1," and "Avengers: Infinity War." The episode also introduces new characters, such as Captain Karja and Orgoscope employees Administrator Kwol and Ura.
The Guardians of the Galaxy, against Gamora's advice, visit Counter-Earth, where they discover High Evolutionary's utopian society. They are aided by bat-like humanoids to locate Theel and capture him, but High Evolutionary destroys and rebuilds Counter-Earth many times due to his experiments. High Evolutionary's lab is actually a giant spaceship that takes off and blasts Counter-Earth. Gamora is attacked by a pig warrior sent by High Evolutionary and is saved by Warlock. The Guardians successfully capture Theel and escape. During their flight, they attempt to save Rocket with Theel's password, stored in his memory.
The Guardians of the Galaxy discover that Nebula and Groot are not on their ship and go to rescue them with Mantis and Drax. On the High Evolutionary's ship, they find imprisoned children who speak an unknown language. Meanwhile, Kraglin and Cosmo are playing cards with Howard the Duck and the Broker when they receive a call from the Guardians. Knowhere, where they are located, is raised and the head of a dead god is revealed. After a battle with the High Evolutionary's army, they are reunited and free the captured children. Rocket discovers a litter of baby raccoons and fights the High Evolutionary to save them. After HE is defeated, the creatures are rescued, but HE is left to perish on his ship.
