Guadalupe Peak in Guadalupe Mountains National Park is the highest point in Texas at an elevation of 8,751 feet with views of El Capitan and the Chihuhuan Desert. The trail to hike up to Guadalupe Peak (also known as Signal Peak) is 8.5 miles out and back with an elevation gain of just over 3,000 feet. You can plan your journey up as a day backpacking trip (make sure to plan on six to eight hours) or you can camp in the nearby Pine Springs campground to get a fresh morning start, which is where the trailhead is and where the Pine Springs Visitor Center is located just a short distance away as well. If you do plan to spend a few days here, you can also hike to the Devil’s Hall or to El Capitan itself as well. We went hiking on this trail in December 2018 and cannot speak to the fire that recently occurred here. If you decide to hike this wonderful trail and have time, make sure to visit Big Bend if you can, which is about five hours away, but well worth it.
