If your garden space is limited, or if you’re tired of fighting rabbits for your cherry tomatoes; try an upside down tomato basket.

Materials Needed:
- 10-inch plastic hanging basket
- potting soil
- 6-pack of marigolds
- one cherry (or grape) tomato plant

Tools Needed:
- drill with 3/4-inch boring bit
- small soil trowel
- watering can or hose


Steps to Make an Upside Down Tomato Basket

Step 1
Drill your hole. Using a 3/4-inch boring bit, drill a hole in through the bottom of your 10-inch hanging basket. Next, hang your basket from a location low enough to work on it.

Step 2
Insert your tomato plant. Poke your tomato plant through the drilled hole, so that the plant is upside down. Try not to damage the plant’s leaves as it moves through the hole. Next, fill the basket 3/4 of the way with good potting soil.

Step 3
Plant your marigolds. Plant six to eight marigolds at the top of the basket. Space them evenly throughout the soil. Marigolds will help to repel the aphids trying to eat your tomatoes.

Step 4
Water sufficiently. Be sure to water sufficiently; initially and throughout the season. The large hole at the bottom of the basket will allow for excellent drainage.

Step 5
Help the plant along. As your tomato plant grows, it will begin to grow upwards around the basket. Using ties to support the plant, may be helpful until the plant begins to wrap around the basket’s supporting wires.
