Curious Music is an ambient guitar record conceived by members of Sydney bands DEN/Exec during the changing of the seasons circa lockdown 2020. The fuzzy, downer headspace and cyclical feel that the duo explore across the two tape sides draws parallels with the work of fellow practitioners Jon Collin or G.S. Schray.
Sailing the course set by British post-punk hoaxers Deux Filles and building a sound world that will appeal to all hermetic six-stringers with a penchant for reverb, this is couchlock music of the highest order. Eerie, spectral noises flit across the stereo field and make 35 minutes somehow feel like a lifetime (and we mean this in the best way possible). Michael Grossman and Jai Morris-Smith allude to a fascination with early musical experiences informing their making of Curious Music, a break from louder, more punk-focused projects and a tragic boat accident tying the duo into a shared musical bond. The spacier compositions of Pascal Comelade also ring true here as a reference point, no matter where you try to ground your ears the phasers are set to disorientate. Guitars are used to mimic bursts of sound one may associate with a trumpet or a piano rather than riffing off the norm, the sound design explained as process of curiosity and experimentation. Grossman is a studio mixer / producer based in Marrickville, Morris-Smith has been playing in Sydney rock bands for close to 15 years.

Packed full of DIY dub mixing, cosmic orchestration and raw, percussion driven polyrhythms, the recordings have been remastered and put to vinyl for the first time with sections from Casual Rhythms Vol. 1 being re-shaped into previously unavailable single tracks. Recording plays a big role in the Elite Beat creative process. The studio as an instrument. Much of the Elite Beat music is mixed in an all-hands-on-deck dub style approach - live with an analog mixer and loads of FX being thrown and dubbed in real time. The sound is genre-less rhythm music with an emphasis on live playing, free form expression and technique that borrows from soundsystem culture. Inspiration can be heard from all parts of time and place. Some Ethio Jazz, Black Ark psychedelia, Exotica, Malian blues, even Haight-Ashbury in the summer of love. Each member an accomplished musician in their own right, Elite Beat thrive on collaboration. 2018 saw the release of their astral-Saharan jams with celebrated Taureg guitarist Mdou Moctar. The players get together every Wednesday evening, sometimes to chat, sometimes to play. The ‘record’ button gets pressed when they find what they are searching for. For this crew it’s all about ‘Casual Rhythms / Harmonious Lifestyles’ - if things don’t fall under that mantra, then it’s got to go. ‘Less is more’ for Elite Beat and their cosmic sounds.")

Research Records indicate their inclination for cosmic instrumentation and kraut pervaded polyrhythms once again with an introduction to newcomer Glass Beams. Recorded at the beginning of 2020, Mirage is the first release from the artist, issuing four compositions that lend from a profusion of sounds and influences.
The albums opener and title Mirage arrives with a coiling vocal mantra that conspires with a sliding bassline and transcendent synthwork, reminiscent of early 70s prog jams yet inverted and futuristic. Taurus is a brisk arrangement, steeped with spaghetti-western elements and space-jazz to pave the way for the agile Kong. Rife with psych-fusion guitar phrases and instrumentation, Kong unfolds like a forecast lysergic voyage. The finale Rattlesnake nudges the serpent with intergalactic scales and spellbinding riffs. We may not know much about the enigmatic Glass Beams but Mirage is one epic inauguration, leaving the listener with more questions than answers.")

Live From The Bubble strikes as a pure and earnest pursuit of experimentation in a fashion that seeks to evoke lifes simple pleasures. Crafted over many an hour spent in the mysterious studio space he nicknames the bubble, the various multi-tracks are looped and layered in a way that pays homage to old library funk and conjures up images of tight, seasoned session musicians in a pre-internet era. Like an old friend youve known for years, Mouches chords and harmonies communicate sentiments in a silent, knowing fashion.
A deliberate and necessary eschewing of words. The array of styles heard across the album hint to a fondness for exotica and surf rock, basking in a sepia-toned woozy nostalgia as opposed to wallowing in melancholy. Elements of Steve Hiett or G.S. Schray flicker in and out across the stereo field, particularly on the closing piece Thinking Straight, which despite its minor keys captures a mood of warmth and content, an end of summer lullaby to close proceedings. Karmouches own admission that the process of LFTB was centred around enjoyment comes as no surprise.")

Ithā Sajā is an ode to dusk, dawn and what’s in between.
Or, Ithā Sajā is a collection of piano recordings I made in my Berlin studio between:
– dusk and dawn
– Hinterhof sununu chatter
– construction site clamour
– upstairs scuffles
– U-Bahn rumbles
– Kreuzberg and Tempelhof
– 2021 and 2022.
wal-Leil [by the night] is inspired by conversations with my friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif during theatre rehearsals.
wal-Leili [by the night II] is an imagined conversation with my friend Raman Khalaf. An homage to the jurjina rhythm found in folk music of northern Iraq and Mesopotamia.
In wan-Najmi [by the star], one phrase repeats over and over with subtle changes – inspired by a procrastinating artist (quietly) dancing before a (nearly) stretched, (almost) blank canvas, dreaming up a (new but familiar) pattern.
In Ithā Hawā [to fall / to fall in love], a flâneur takes an early evening stroll along the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg.
Tadāris [terrains] is an ongoing series of acoustic études – played with mallets, objects and fingers inside and outside the piano.
In Ithā Sajā [if it settles / when it darkens], my left hand keeps a steady rhythm while the right one wanders in search of a nocturnal motif. My eyes peek out the window. It’s the first attempts of dawn.
Marking Khaled Kurbeh’s second release with Research Records, Ithā Sajā is a collection of nine piano pieces. The gatefold vinyl features cover art and a booklet of drawings by Ida Lawrence – nine repetitions of Khaled’s upright piano, taking shape or disintegrating as one turns the page. Previous single Skinrat curiously references off-rhythms and vocal cut ups a la late naughties UK bass music, while abstract jams such as For Whomst channel the adventurous live-and-direct sound of Golden Teacher and kindred experimentalist Inga Copeland.
Heavy low-end bass frequencies and twitches of dub fx permeate the LP, shades of post-punk and loopy minimal wave (Doodle Damage) contrasting with the more jagged dance orientated moments. In opting to close No! with their most expansive recording (Body Double), Big Yawn delve deeper into the tense and ritualistic atmospheres the prior tracks only hint at. The effect seems akin to a snapshot into their lengthy freestyle practice sessions; a process honed and refined here for the LP format. Mouche (real name Tim Karmouche) returns to Australian label Research Records with another full-length of imaginary soundtracks, instrumentals and sun-kissed digital jazz. Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it.")
