Update 1. PLEASE NOTE Chris Lux' comment: "Do not underestimate the power of the great lakes. These waters are deadly at times!!! I personally know the might of Lake Michigan!!!"
Notice the extreme violence towards the end of the pier. The wave that got me was just outside my field of view. It was one of the strange cross waves cutting directly across the channel. You can see several of them in the clip. I saw it coming out of the corner of my eye but didn't want to stop filming - notice the camera pans sightly right just before the end, then pow. That ended the morning. Now I have a waterproof video camera so that kind of thing won't be so disruptive. :-)
