In 1778, Alexander Hamilton visited the falls and was struck by its potential to power industry. When Hamilton became the nation’s first Secretary of Treasury, he selected this site as the first planned industrial city, which he called a “national manufactory”. The city of Paterson, named after the governor of New Jersey, was soon born.
