GTAV is one of the most successful entertainment products ever made and, in the grand tradition of all of Rockstar's open world titles, has an ambitious narrative to go along with it. It's just that, well, Grand Theft Auto 5's story is messy in a way its predecessors aren't. I believe these problems are emblematic of the game's focus on one of its most recognisable faces, Trevor Philips. With his violent psychopathy and complete disregard for social norms and consequences, he seems specifically designed to solve the problems of "dissonance" laid at the feet of GTA4 with its protagonist Niko Bellic—only for his aforementioned character traits to throw the plot into complete disarray. Lets examine these two games as a case study to see if terms we've come to view as cut-and-dry in games criticism are as important as they might seem.
