GPT Machiavelli begins from the premise that a republic is not conquered first by force, but by changing how citizens decide what is legitimate. The modern politician does not need to abolish elections, courts, agencies, journalism, science, or law. He needs to persuade enough citizens that these institutions are trustworthy only when controlled by their own faction. Once legitimacy is transferred from process to possession, every outcome can be judged by who benefits rather than by how it was reached.
The easiest targets are expert-mediated systems: elections, public health, taxation, courts, schools, regulatory agencies, journalism, and bureaucracy. Divide the many from the few: voters from election administrators, patients from epidemiologists, taxpayers from revenue officials, parents from educators, workers from managers, citizens from bureaucrats, the people from the experts. Then personalize the institution. There is no abstract court, only enemy judges; no election office, only partisan clerks; no public-health agency, only arrogant doctors; no newspaper, only propagandists with bylines. A named enemy is easier to mobilize against than an institutional defect.
The escalation is predictable. “They made a mistake” becomes “they are biased.” “They are biased” becomes “they are captured.” “They are captured” becomes “the whole system is rigged.” Finally, “the system is rigged” becomes “no result produced by that system can bind us unless we win.” At that point the original dispute no longer matters. The small error, real or imagined, has been converted into evidence of a hostile regime. Every correction becomes a cover-up, every expert answer becomes condescension, every adverse ruling becomes proof of corruption, and every defeat becomes theft.
The final aim is authority reassignment. The politician does not truly abolish expertise; he captures the right to decide which experts count. He does not abolish bureaucracy; he makes bureaucracy legitimate only when staffed by his people. He does not abolish truth; he makes truth dependent on factional authentication. A republic survives when citizens can distrust power without destroying the possibility of legitimate authority.
