Hey! Wow! I made a short film! I started this project in the beginning of October, with the challenge of finishing it before Halloween. I thought it would be a tight schedule, but turns out if I actually sit down and do the work, I can turn around this short film in three weeks (and that's including slacking off).
Anyway, here's a bit of ~backstory~. In the middle of August, I finished a manuscript and sent it off for critiques, and I thought I'd use the rest of my work break to write another book idea I've had for years. BUT. The story just wasn't working out despite all my attempts to fix it. It left me frustrated, and my creativity and will to write tanked. I was miserable, and I felt like I was wasting my time.
Towards the end of September, after wrangling this uncooperative story for a little more than a month, I was talking to my sister about Halloween, and I remembered a short film idea I pitched in 2022 called "Gourd & Me". It was for a mini competition at work, and if I had won, I would have had a small team to help me work on the film. I didn't win, but at the time, I had thought that if I really wanted to, I could probably make the film on my own. It had a very simple style, and the story is also pretty straightforward. Really, I just needed the time.
I had sort of forgotten about this until this tiny small little conversation I had with my sister, and suddenly I got excited. I've been on a months-long break from work. Previously, I used this time to make my Wolf 359 short film, and that experience gave me confidence that I could totally handle "Gourd & Me" on my own. I had the skills, AND I had the time. At this point, it was almost October, and with the deadline of uploading the finished film on Halloween, that meant I only had one month to design, storyboard, rig, animated, and produce it. But hey, what else was I going to do with my time? And it would be a nice challenge!
So, yeah. Here's the finished film! It's loosely based on a true story. A few years ago, my sister carved a tiny pumpkin (for our porg doll), and we were going to take pictures of it with the porg. But we kept procrastinating taking pictures, until the pumpkin began to grow all mouldy and gross. At the time, I thought, "Wow, if porg was real, he would be really upset. He didn't even get to do anything with this pumpkin yet, and it's already dying." I could imagine his little voice saying, "You can't go yet! There's still so much we have to do!" That pumpkin's name was Gourd, and the reason the characters in the short film are chickens is because porg is basically a fantasy chicken, and I didn't want to draw an actual porg because I didn't want to get sued by the mouse.
WOW that was a lot of typing. This film was animated in Toon Boom Harmony. The backgrounds were drawn in Photoshop. The film was edited in Premiere. Sound effects are from Freesound.org. Music was made in MuseScore 2 and composed by me. Voice acting was also done by me. If you noticed Mom and Eggy sounded kind of similar, no you didn't.
