2004’s The Batman introduced one of the most bizarre and brilliant villains ever created: the Digitally Advanced Villain Emulator, also known as D.A.V.E. Built by Hugo Strange, this artificial intelligence was a mashup of Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Freeze, and Clayface, all rolled into one unstable mind, as Gotham’s Ultimate Criminal Mastermind.
D.A.V.E. wasn’t just another robot, he was Batman’s greatest hits album of evil, unpredictable, theatrical, and dangerously obsessed. From nearly exposing Bruce Wayne’s identity to turning the Batcave into his final stage,
D.A.V.E. is one of the strangest one and done villains in Dark Knight history.
In this video, I break down his creation, his showdown with Batman, his surprising return in the tie-in comics, and how he connects to the modern villain Failsafe.
