In Matthew chapters 10 and 11, Jesus empowers and sends out his twelve disciples with authority to heal diseases, cast out demons, and proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near, initially directing them only to the lost sheep of Israel while instructing them to travel lightly, depend on hospitality, and shake the dust from their feet against rejecting towns; he warns them of coming persecution, family divisions, and the need to take up their cross, yet urges fearless confession of him, promising divine care and eternal reward for faithfulness. Transitioning into chapter 11, as Jesus continues teaching in Galilee, John the Baptist—imprisoned and hearing of Christ's works—sends disciples to ask if Jesus is the expected Messiah, to which Jesus responds by pointing to his miracles fulfilling prophecy (healing the blind, lame, deaf, and leprous, raising the dead, and preaching good news to the poor); Jesus then praises John as the greatest prophet, the fulfillment of the Elijah prophecy, yet notes that the least in the kingdom surpasses him, rebukes unrepentant cities like Chorazin and Capernaum for rejecting his mighty works despite witnessing them, thanks the Father for revealing truth to the humble rather than the wise, and extends a gracious invitation to all who are weary and burdened to come to him for gentle rest and an easy yoke.
