Gorilla Chop in Okinawa is one of the favored snorkeling, free-diving and scuba diving locations in Okinawa. Located in the Motobu region of the island it draws people to its shallow, often clear, and protected waters. For many though one of the greatest spectacles is the annual sardine aggregation under the nearby pier.
If we're talking biomass this has nothing on the sradine run of Southern Africa but nonetheless, to be swimming amidst potentially millions of silver little fish, watching as their aggregation shifts to avoid predators and humans alike is pretty wild.
After a few weekend jaunts to swim with them armed either with a GoPro or a split-water photo rig I came up with this short interlude for peace and quiet. Just a moment in time at peace with the Ocean and an amazing congregation of diminutive fish that call it home.
