Goodwick Coastal Town Walk – Pembrokeshire Harbour Views
A calm coastal stroll through Goodwick, the harbour town that sits at the edge of Fishguard Bay in north Pembrokeshire. With sweeping sea views, working harbour life, and wide promenades overlooking the water, this walk captures a quieter side of the Welsh coast. The tide shifts gently across the bay, seabirds glide above the shoreline, and the rhythm of the sea quietly shapes the pace of the town.
🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore
Goodwick grew rapidly during the late 19th century when the harbour was expanded to support a major ferry terminal linking Wales and Ireland. The long breakwater and harbour wall still dominate the waterfront, protecting the bay and creating the calm waters that define the town today. Ferries continue to depart from nearby Fishguard Harbour, maintaining the historic maritime connection between Pembrokeshire and the Irish coast.
Walking along the shoreline, the view stretches across Fishguard Bay, a broad sweep of water framed by low hills and distant cliffs. The promenade offers uninterrupted sea vistas, with fishing boats, sailing craft, and seabirds adding quiet movement to the scene. The sound of waves and the salty Atlantic air give the walk a relaxed coastal atmosphere that feels far removed from the busier tourist towns further south.
Goodwick also carries echoes of history. The nearby coastline was the site of the 1797 French invasion, the last invasion of mainland Britain, when French troops landed at Carregwastad Point just a few miles away. Today the area feels peaceful and welcoming, with colourful houses, quiet streets, and the steady rhythm of harbour life.
