*Update* As of today, 12 August, they have ‘temporarily’ closed until a new chef is appointed.
Today I visit the World Famous Red Alligator Pub in South Church Bishop Auckland for a two course afternoon meal. The Red Alligator Pub in South Church was the local pub of Denys Smith, who trained the famous Red Alligator, who won the Grand National in 1968, whose stables were based in South Church, just outside Bishop Auckland. There is a corner of the Red Alligator pub still today, dedicated to Deny Smith and Red Alligator, showing many old photos of the pair and also jockey Brian Fletcher, who rode Red Alligator to victory in 1968 and then whet on the win the Grand National twice more, riding the famous Red Rum.
