I have been debating selling my Roland JX-3P (well, trading it for my old Virus kB, because I just love that keybed, even though I've got the TI). So of course I brought my JX-3P out and tested it out. Then I tested it against my System 8. Doing that made me just appreciate the JX more. Sigh. I don’t know why it is so difficult to part with this stuff. But when I played this sound (that you hear at the beginning), it just sang to me. I loved the noise that seems to become additive with more notes. It somehow helps create the tone I’m going for, especially when sent through the Strymon Volante pedal. It’s not that the System 8 doesn’t sound similar (in fact, I think I created this sound on the S8 first and then ported it over to the JX), it does, but it doesn’t impart any noise, or what I would call “character”. It just sounds lifeless in comparison. And so I’m left with what I’m always left with. More gear, because I find all my stuff useful and fun.

Well, I’m sure I could just do the trade. I bet any number of synths I have could make this sound. It didn’t even use ‘that famous Roland Chorus’. I probably spend more time trying to tell myself I can sell my gear, and then don’t, than I do playing the gear for music.

But I guess this time I used it to my advantage. I made a song of it.

I knew something was wrong when, on Monday, she got up when I was standing in the hallway and she just looked off. Then she said Im dizzy. Every time she has a fever she wakes up dizzy. And so she has been sick. I wish I could have relaxed with her the whole time, but I was busy with work. Hopefully shell start feeling better soon. The Tooth Fairy did leave her a note, wishing her well, letting her know that someone had told her my daughter was sick. My daughter was so excited to know that one of her stuffed animals had talked with the Tooth Fairy at night to explain the situation. That was, probably, the highlight of the week. Just one of those memorable days that Ill cherish, with some things that I cant talk about, but other things that I can. I played some games with my youngest daughter while my wife picked up our older kid from school. When she came home, she asked me to pull out a loose tooth. I did - blood everywhere. The joy on her face when it came out, and the follow up pain and tears and Wow this is different was just exciting to watch. She is growing up and I love being such an integral part of that. It makes me so happy. Then, the three of us played board games for another hour or two while it rained outside. Honestly, there could not have been a better day. It’s funny because it would seem like a “success” so to speak… but it’s not so different than when I only had 100 subscribers or 500, or 5,000. Truthfully, I guess the successes I have are raising my kids, it’s the time I truly feel like “I made it.” My career doesn’t feel so successful either. But I do enjoy the stuff I do here, and I suppose doing it has allowed me to write at least 21 albums worth of electronic music, which in itself is a feat I suppose. Success just doesn’t seem to be an endpoint. You can look at someone who seems successful, and they can be moments from catastrophe, either self-inflicted or otherwise, or they don’t view their lives as successful at all. It’s like success is that pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. You think it’s there and all you have to do is catch up with it, but you really won’t ever see it, because there is no pot of gold. Some of the most miserable, hateful people I know… have lots of the stuff. I guess I am learning something in this world: that money and success won’t be there to make me happy. But I feel real joy around my family, and some joy around things I achieve, but it’s pretty clear that there will never be a thing that I do that tells me that I was or will be successful.
