Did you know that the Gone in 60 Seconds is actually a tribute-remake of a 1974 film called… Gone in 60 Seconds by HB Halicki. The original Eleanor is a customized 1971 Ford Mustang sportsroof redressed as a 1973. Halicki died on set filming Gone in 60 Seconds 2 when a telephone pole fell on him during a freak accident after stunt went wrong. Years later Jerry Bruckheimer got permission from Halicki’s wife to make a tribute-remake of the original movie. The producers of the new movie originally wanted Eleanor to be a Ford GT40 like in the movie Ford versus Ferrari, but the cost to build a fleet of fake GT40s would be way too expensive, but honestly as a tall guy, I don't even think six foot tall Nick Cage would have even fit in a GT40. So they settled on a modified 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500. This fastback has a 5.8 liter V8 engine that generated 400 horsepower. A total of 11 GT 500 Eleanors were built for the movie. The first three were hero cars, they were used to capture all the beauty shots in the movie. The rest were dressed in Eleanor outfits, but each one was kind of designed for their own different stunts. One was for high-speed maneuvers, one had higher gearing for the 100 plus blasting on the LA river, one jumped off a ramp and was destroyed on impact, a second was launched off of an even larger ramp, another was hoisted off the ground to position it for flying-in-the-air scenes. Another was a landing stunt ,and it too was destroyed ,when they let it slam into a concrete bridge. But this is a far cry from the original 1974 from that used only ONE yes, ONE Eleanor Mustang for the entire filming, including a 40 minute long car chase and an insane 30 foot jump finale. The main “hero” car recently sold for a staggering $1 million, but if you don't have that kind of cash and you just have a random 60’s Mustang laying around, you can go to eleanor-mustang.com and they can buy, build, or convert your Mustang into an Eleanor. If you're depressed because you don't have either of those, well, at least you have our videos! So come back tomorrow and see movie car #7 of our 31 movie cars of the 31 days of March.
