But he recovered from an early bogey to carve his way through the frontrunners, finishing with a sizzling three-under round that gave him a clubhouse lead of five-under, which Zalatoris matched with a clutch putt on 18. The pair went to a rare three-hole playoff and both players birdied the first hole. Thomas seized a one-shot lead courtesy of a short, missed putt by Zalatoris at the second hole. Thomas then converted the advantage into his second major title with a par at the 18th. The win matches the greatest last-round comeback in PGA history; American John Mahaffey’s seven-shot rally at Oakmont in 1978. Earlier, Pereira led by as many as three shots at nine-under, but he bled out with five bogeys, before imploding on the final hole with a double bogey. The Chilean had a one-shot lead over clubhouse leaders Thomas and Zalatoris as he teed off on 18 and found the water on the right. He took a penalty drop, then missed the green left, before failing to scramble from the rough for a bogey to slip back into a tie for third with Cameron Young. Rounding out the top five were Tommy Fleetwood, Chris Kirk and Matt Fitzpatrick at three-under.
