FATE Of Northcote Golf Course Is FINALLY Decided...
Welcome back to Golf District. If Darebin Council agrees to revamp the in-demand property with the state government, Northcote will preserve its public golf course but transform the surrounding acreage into shared community space for other sports and pastimes. Northcote state MP Kat Theophanous has offered $200,000 for the redevelopment as a "circuit-breaker" to resolve community disagreement about how the 24-hectare site along Merri Creek should be used.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, when golf was forbidden and locals began enjoying the tree-lined fairways for walks, picnics, and passive relaxation, a movement to remove the nine-hole golf course and turn the property over to the larger community gathered support. With the club's lease expiring in June, the council solicited public input and received hundreds of responses on what to do with the site.
