Can a person deny the Hypostatic Union and be Trinitarian? Can a Mormon believe in the Trinity? LDS Hayden Carroll did a post debate interview with Avery ie GodLogic with hist thoughts on his debate with Jacob Hansen on the Trinity. In this interview GodLogic was asked can a person deny the Hypostatic Union ie the Incarnation of Jesus Christ and be a Trinitarian? GodLogic said yes! And later in the interview GodLogic asked Hayden Carroll can a Latter Day Saint believe in the Trinity? Hayden Carroll said yes a Latter Day Saint can believe in the Trinity as there are not many official doctrines that a Mormon must actually believe! Both GodLogic and Hayden Carroll are wrong on their answers and I will be sharing why in this stream, not attacking, but giving a biblical response on why both their answers are not accurate.
The Hypostatic Union refers to the Incarnation of Jesus Christ the truth that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man in one person. By His eternal nature, Jesus is God, the second Person of the Trinity, existing with the Father and the Holy Spirit before all things. In the Incarnation, the eternal Son of God came into the world and took on a true human nature. He became fully human like us in every way, yet without sin. When Jesus came to earth, He did not stop being God. Instead, He willingly set aside the outward display of His divine glory, humbling Himself and taking on the limitations of human life. Though fully divine, He lived as a man among us. Through His life, Jesus revealed the Father to the world and taught about the coming of the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity. His mission was to give His life as an atoning sacrifice for sin, fulfilling the Scriptures, and to rise from the dead, defeating sin and death. Understanding the Hypostatic Union is essential because it explains who Jesus truly is. Only someone who is fully God could perfectly reveal God and provide a sacrifice powerful enough to save humanity, and only someone who is truly human could represent us and die in our place. In Jesus Christ, God and man are united in one person, making salvation possible.
In Mormonism, according to the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, God the Father was once a man who became God through obedience to laws and ordinances given by His own God. This teaching implies that the Father Himself had a father before Him, and that this pattern continues backward in an endless progression of Gods. According to the teachings of the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, and statements from later Mormon prophets, God has not always been God in the absolute, eternal sense. Instead, He was once a man who progressed to become a God, just as other Gods had done before Him. Mormon teaching also holds that human beings can likewise progress to become Gods. In a similar way, Jesus Christ is taught to have become a God through progression, rather than having been eternally God in the same way understood in historic Christianity. Although some Mormons today may say that God is eternal, this claim does not align with the original teachings of Joseph Smith and Mormon prophets, who described God as a being who progressed to godhood rather than one who has always been God eternally.
