I would say the God of War III was the pinnacle of the original GoW series. The original is great, but was expanded upon in God of War 2, but the sheer epic size and scope of God of War III is unmatched. The jump from PS2 to PS3 gave Santa Monica Studios the extra power to reach the epic hights of design they couldn't previously due to the constraints of the PS2's aging hardware. The PS2 games are great, but God of War III is incredibly more epic in nature than both of the previous games in the series. Just that opening sequence alone in the game was a masterful showing of what the game was going to be.

The series definitely peaked at God of War III. I like God of War Ascension, but the formula was definitely wearing thin by the time it hit. Between the PS2, PSP, and God of War III, the series definitely needed a formula change after Ascension.

Either way, God of War III, great game, epic game, and was a strong exclusive for the PS3 in a time it really needed some exclusive games.
