Go karts & hot rodding in California, OH MY! Hot Rodding has a rich history in California, particularly in Southern California. The origins of go karts and hot rodding can be traced back to the 1920s and 1930s, when young enthusiasts would modify and tune their cars to make them faster and more powerful. There are many ideas as to why hot rods gained popularity just after World War II. One of them is that young men were trained as mechanics and engineers, and when they returned home, they applied those skills to their cars. The availability of surplus military parts and the rise of drag racing in the 1950s fueled the hot rodding culture even further. In the 1940s and 1950s, Southern California was a hotbed of hot rodding activity, with young enthusiasts gathering at drive-ins, burger joints, and other hangouts to show off their modified cars and compete in impromptu races.

Some of the most famous hot rods of the era were built by custom car builders like Norm Grabowski with his Model T and Kookie's car, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's the Beatnik Bandit, and Boyd Coddington's the Whatthehaye and The French Connection. These builders pushed the limits of automotive design and engineering, creating one-of-a-kind custom cars that were often featured in magazines and movies. Hot rodding was so hot that in 1948, Robert E. Petersen started Hot Rod magazine, the first magazine of its kind, but it wouldn’t be the last. Automotive enthusiasts have Petersen and Petersen Publishing to thank for the many publications that keep them informed and up to date about their favorite motorized vehicles. The popularity of hot rodding eventually led to the establishment of organized racing events, such as the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), which was founded in 1951. Today, hot rodding remains a popular pastime in California and around the world, with enthusiasts continuing to modify and customize their cars in new and innovative ways.
