As we age, I think we should think of ourselves as the keeper of the stories. Particularly at a time when our educational system has so downplayed the importance of history, we need to compensate for that by passing on tales that simply need to be told. Younger women who haven’t heard the trajectory of Gloria Steinem’s life will know far less about their own.
Almost every opportunity that a younger woman now has in America, she has at least indirectly because of Steinem’s contribution. Almost every door that is opened to her has Steinem’s fingerprints on it. There is no way to overstate the influence that Gloria Steinem had on this country. Whatever progress women have made over the last sixty years is partly due to her.
There’s so much information out there about Steinem, particularly now. Documentaries such as Gloria: In Her Own Words plus other examples of audio, video, articles and books abound. My video today is simply my personal sharing about a woman who will live on in my heart, as she will live on in the hearts of so many.
I think if she were here, her most emphatic message would be that we must carry on. The same spirit that guided her is here to guide us. What we need is her chutzpah, her compassion, her wisdom, and her love.
Rest peacefully, dear Gloria. I speak for many in assuring you that we promise we will take it from here.
