Taurus is a brisk arrangement, steeped with spaghetti-western elements and space-jazz to pave the way for the agile Kong. Rife with psych-fusion guitar phrases and instrumentation, Kong unfolds like a forecast lysergic voyage. The finale Rattlesnake nudges the serpent with intergalactic scales and spellbinding riffs. We may not know much about the enigmatic Glass Beams but Mirage is one epic inauguration, leaving the listener with more questions than answers.

Rafet studied music from a young age. Tertiary education brought about further teachings in jazz. Growing up in the family village of Miniara (North Lebanon) saw to an inquiry into maqamat and traditional arabic musics post study. After composing for multiple ensembles and performing in various projects over the years, Rafet settles into his own artistry with You Are In The Embrace of The History. This body of work is one that is personal; sighting connection to a land, spirit and devotion to a holy other.
You Are In the Embrace of The History delivers longing with grace, a realisation of ancestral memory with the eloquence of an internal knowing. Finding home in the cradle of the poem, a universal affirmation lies deep within an irregular heartbeat.
The listener is offered an invitation to enter into the vista of expansive harmonic voicings, anticipating resolution. The work is edged by expressions of spiritual jazz and tempered by the scope of ambient musics.

Mouche returns to Australian label Research Records with his debut single Juice. The forthcoming album, Lake Songs out in late May 2023.
Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it.")

Research Records presents Melbourne electronic quartet Big Yawns second contribution to the label, South Preston Garage. A title to honour the bands beloved bandroom, S.P.G compiles demos extracted from the studio for a digital release with a limited run of cassettes. Big Yawn reflects that completing the EP presented the challenge of creatively engineering the lo-fi recordings in a way that offered thrilling and creative insight for us and perhaps some replay value for the listener.
S.P.G embodies Big Yawns trademark pastiche, fusing together rich percussion and sweeping synthesizers that are recontextualised through an extensive shed jam. The band characterises the first two tracks British Teeth and Burno as Big Yawn flavoured DnB, with refracted drum phrasing and unrelenting delays. Cascading acid-tinged bass rules in the quivering 4 Dads; a venture into the bands stockier temperament. The panoramic Burton Bell delivers raw and biting percussion, while remaining faithful to electronics with its layered sampling. The release then disperses into seaside rapture with its farewell Bad Boy. On Bad Boy, the band comment that the track is perhaps our most melodic number to date, with heavily looping synths evoking a Hiroshi Sato/city-pop feel.
What is perhaps most unique about Big Yawn is that they present familiar electronic sounds amplified as a live band. A timely release; S.P.G translates the satisfaction of hearing a live band in a period when all we really want is to go to a gig.")

The various sides of Melbourne quartet Big Yawn fluctuate neatly across their debut full length No!. Subtle dub techno delays combine with live drums on Attaboi to formally introduce their clear affectation for the motorik sounds of 70s Deutschland. Previous single Skinrat curiously references off-rhythms and vocal cut ups a la late naughties UK bass music, while abstract jams such as For Whomst channel the adventurous live-and-direct sound of Golden Teacher and kindred experimentalist Inga Copeland.
Heavy low-end bass frequencies and twitches of dub fx permeate the LP, shades of post-punk and loopy minimal wave (Doodle Damage) contrasting with the more jagged dance orientated moments. In opting to close No! with their most expansive recording (Body Double), Big Yawn delve deeper into the tense and ritualistic atmospheres the prior tracks only hint at. The effect seems akin to a snapshot into their lengthy freestyle practice sessions; a process honed and refined here for the LP format. Until their next outing, the relentless groove of Anthem X will keep hips swaying during those sweaty early morning club hours.")

Berlin-based Syrian musician Khaled Kurbeh makes his Research Records debut with Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh, a tapestry of soundscapes written, performed and recorded across four years as part of his practice muhawalāt [attempts, variations] and hawāmesh [margins]: an outlet of gestures, sonic footnotes and observations from the everyday.
Kurbeh’s first release in seven years departs from his largely acoustic debut, Aphorisms, a collaboration with oud player Raman Khalaf and ensemble with elements of maqām and jazz.
Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh offers a collection of 10 electroacoustic compositions – they’re brooding and experimental with hints of musique concrète. The tracklist implies a mapping or an itinerary. Field recordings of swallows and the snapping and un-shelling of sunflower seeds on interlude Nuzha I [Excursion I] are countered by sparse composition of low-end synth, harmonium, upright piano and prepared fender rhodes played with mallets on Darb I–II [Path I–II]. Patterns of cymbals and agitated bells appear on Jauqét Ajrās [Choir of Bells], while currents of bowed strings shiver and stutter on al-Ajrāf [The Cliffs]. The release captures four years of overlapping sonic wanders, finely balancing tensions of harmony and dissonance, stillness and resonance, texture and rhythm – recorded inside and outside.
The gatefold vinyl features artworks by Ida Lawrence and includes a booklet of 10 painted variations of the one scene. On the outer cover, paths stretch under a dramatically accented and vivid sky; while inside, the same landscape appears over and over in another light.

Solo excursions from Tim Karmouche (The Murlocs/Crepes/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild) provide a joyous confluence of melody and rhythm, an instrumental ride through imaginary soundtracks and drifting liminal atmospheres.
Live From The Bubble strikes as a pure and earnest pursuit of experimentation in a fashion that seeks to evoke lifes simple pleasures. Crafted over many an hour spent in the mysterious studio space he nicknames the bubble, the various multi-tracks are looped and layered in a way that pays homage to old library funk and conjures up images of tight, seasoned session musicians in a pre-internet era. Like an old friend youve known for years, Mouches chords and harmonies communicate sentiments in a silent, knowing fashion.
A deliberate and necessary eschewing of words. The array of styles heard across the album hint to a fondness for exotica and surf rock, basking in a sepia-toned woozy nostalgia as opposed to wallowing in melancholy. Elements of Steve Hiett or G.S. Schray flicker in and out across the stereo field, particularly on the closing piece Thinking Straight, which despite its minor keys captures a mood of warmth and content, an end of summer lullaby to close proceedings. Karmouches own admission that the process of LFTB was centred around enjoyment comes as no surprise.")

Packed full of DIY dub mixing, cosmic orchestration and raw, percussion driven polyrhythms, the recordings have been remastered and put to vinyl for the first time with sections from Casual Rhythms Vol. 1 being re-shaped into previously unavailable single tracks. Recording plays a big role in the Elite Beat creative process. The studio as an instrument. Much of the Elite Beat music is mixed in an all-hands-on-deck dub style approach - live with an analog mixer and loads of FX being thrown and dubbed in real time. The sound is genre-less rhythm music with an emphasis on live playing, free form expression and technique that borrows from soundsystem culture. Inspiration can be heard from all parts of time and place. Some Ethio Jazz, Black Ark psychedelia, Exotica, Malian blues, even Haight-Ashbury in the summer of love. Each member an accomplished musician in their own right, Elite Beat thrive on collaboration. 2018 saw the release of their astral-Saharan jams with celebrated Taureg guitarist Mdou Moctar. The players get together every Wednesday evening, sometimes to chat, sometimes to play. The ‘record’ button gets pressed when they find what they are searching for.
