Gladiatorial Clan War? The BIZARRE Battle of the Clans in Scotland...
Now Scotland is hardly a country known for having a peaceful history, and certainly not when it comes to clans. Yet most clan battles were organic, spontaneous events, not prearranged in front of a crowd like a gladiatorial battle in ancient Rome. That is what makes the Battle of the Clans so intriguing and frankly, so bizarre.
The Battle of the Clans also gives me a chance to talk about a fascinating clan in Scottish history, Clan Chattan. Or is it a clan? Let me tell you more…
Today I’ve taken you to the beautiful North Inch park in Perth, the site of the Battle of the Clans, also known as the Battle of the North Inch, that took place in 1396.
It was fought between Clan Chattan and an opponent that is not fully clear, known only as "Clan Quhele,” thought to maybe mean Kay i.e. Clan Mackay. Yet many have argued that in reality the opposing side was much more likely to be either Clan Cameron or Clan Davidson, but more on that later.
Now Clan Chattan is one of the most famous and powerful clans in Scotland, yet it isn’t really a clan, it’s a confederacy of various Highland clans. It was, and still is, made up of around twelve separate Scottish clans but with additional branches, who back in the day had their own clan chief recognized under Scottish law, but who were united under a superior chief of the confederation for protection and strength. Similar to how the US is made up of different states but has a federal government.
