Let's visit some huge railroad classification yards. Real and model railroads must sort and store hundreds of freight cars, which requires thousands of acres of land and miles of track.
We start in Barstow California flying over the BNSF yards. This includes a "hump yard" where cars roll down a "hump" and coast through points into individual sorting tracks. But the main yard is a massive double-ended yard with arrival and departure tracks in the center of the arrangement of sorting tracks. The yard is busy, there are often two trains arriving or leaving simultaneously.
Onto the Laramie Wyoming yards, this time in HO scale on the Union Pacific Wyoming division in Cornville Arizona. This layout features several large yards along a mile of track. (actual mile, not scale mile)
