Giant puffball, or Calvatia gigantea, is a mushroom that grows throughout North America. It is one of my favorite wild edibles because it offers an incredible amount of food value for the find and is easily prepared. In my area it is not uncommon for these to grow to be the size of a small beach-ball in prime conditions.
In this video I take you through the process of identifying this mushroom.
WARNING: Never take my advice on wild edibles at face value. RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF! Always consult a local expert before consuming ANY wild edible plant; ESPECIALLY MUSHROOMS!
If AFTER consulting a local expert on this, you decide to consume these, here are a few ways I like to prepare and consume them.
1) Slice thinly (1/4" - 1/2") and saute in either butter or olive oil. Serve as is with chicken or as a layer on a hamburger. As a note of caution, these things soak up oil readily so try not to over expose them to it.
2) Saute and mix in with scrambled eggs.
This mushroom has a texture close to that of either scrambled eggs or tofu yet has a very pleasant mushroom taste. Many folks refer to this as a breakfast mushroom because of its scrambled egg-like texture.
However you decide to eat these, they will quickly take on the flavor of whatever you cook them with (like tofu).
Because I am the only person in my family that eats mushrooms, I will saute an entire mushroom in one sitting and then freeze the excess for later use. They can also be dried for later use.
