This seminar explores the science behind origin determination, including the analytical techniques, field‑based research and gemological indicators used to identify provenance. Shane F. McClure, Global Director of Colored Stone Services at GIA introduces the updated Colored Stone Reports and expanded origin determination services now available for opal, peridot and demantoid garnet, alongside established origin reporting for sapphire, ruby, emerald, alexandrite, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel and jade.

Colored stone origin determination has become increasingly important as the industry places greater emphasis on transparency, authenticity and responsible sourcing. In response, GIA introduced the redesigned Colored Stone Reports and expanded origin services at the beginning of 2026. These new reports feature an elevated design that enhances storytelling, presenting findings with greater clarity and relevance for both the trade and consumers.

Seminar attendees gained practical guidance on reading and using GIA reports, insights into recent treatment detection developments and an overview of emerging colored stone trends shaping the global market.
