Ghostwire: Tokyo is filled to the brim with creativity and unique ideas. It's too bad it doesn't quite land on its execution.
Call it a cautionary recommendation - it's very much a steam sale kind of pickup.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a frustrating title. There's some interesting, unique content and ideas buried underneath its fairly derivative open-world design.
It has a great atmosphere and premise - wandering an empty Tokyo filled with spirits from Japanese folklore and integrating them into the modern day. It ended up being a fairly educational experience on a number of fronts, from Japanese folklore to districts of Tokyo.
There's something eerie yet surpassingly relaxing wandering the empty streets of a city not known for empty streets.
There's some inspired enemy design, but it falls short due to a combat system that feels like it's missing a few gears. The main quest is mostly fine, with a few standout moments, but some of the sidequests are where the best of Ghostwire Tokyo happens.
While it's fun to explore the city, Ghostwire Tokyo pulls heavily from the western open-world design philosophy and can turn into a bit of a checklist simulator.
I think something like a hub-based model could've been a better design choice.
Yet, with all that, I did enjoy my time with Ghostwire: Tokyo. I'm glad to have played it. As far as recommending? It's very much a "steam sale" kind of game where if you can pick it up for 20-30 bucks, it can be worth looking into.
I think there is potential for it to gather a small following overtime, something that may be looked back on as an overlooked title.
Tango Gameworks is a talented studio - I'm curious to see what they take from Ghostwire: Tokyo in what they put out next.
